Causes of Battery Deterioration

Automotive and motorcycle batteries may deteriorate faster than normal if used or maintained improperly, affecting starting performance and overall battery lifespan.

  1. Undercharging: Often caused by infrequent vehicle use or an inefficient charging system. The battery does not receive a full charge, resulting in insufficient power and faster deterioration.
  2. Overcharging: Occurs when the battery is charged excessively or when the alternator malfunctions. This leads to excessive heat buildup, which can damage the internal structure and shorten  battery life.
  3. Internal Short Circuit: Caused by excessive sediment buildup at the bottom of the battery or damaged/broken plates, leading to contact between positive and negative terminals.
  4. Use of Additives: Adding chemical enhancers may disrupt the internal chemical balance and damage the battery.
  5. Incorrect Battery Type: Using a battery that is not suitable for the vehicle or application can reduce performance and lifespan. 6. Electrical System Issues: Problems such as current leakage or malfunctioning electrical components can cause continuous power drain, making the battery work harder and deteriorate faster. 7. Sulfation: Occurs when the battery is left unused for long periods, undercharged, or has improper electrolyte levels. This leads to sulfate buildup on the plates, reducing performance.8. Poor Electrolyte or Distilled Water Quality: Using impure distilled water or low-quality electrolyte from the initial fill can accelerate battery deterioration.
